Why Do Kittens So Often Have to Be Adopted As a Pair?

Many rescues insist on placing kittens in pairs or allow a single kitten to be placed only in a home where there will be another kitten or young cat for company.  Another California rescue, The Itty Bitty Orphan Kitty (IBOK) Rescue, has posted a thoughtful and well-written explanation of this principle at the following location:

At PPCR, we prefer to place most kittens in pairs but occasionally have a kitten that would do well, or even do best, as a single cat.  If you are interested in a specific kitten and the kitten's web page does not make clear whether that kitten needs to go home with a friend or to a friend, be sure to get clarification from the foster mom or contact person listed on the kitten's web page.

  1. We adopted 2 kittens- sisters/bonded pair. No way they would be the happy kittens they are now without each other. Having 2 helps them and us. They have so much energy - it is much easier on us that they have each other to take it out on. While we are at work- we know they have each other to be with. They don't need to be around each other 24/7 but there is a comfort level that they have knowing that they CAN if they wanted to.

  2. I just got an email from you guys & wandered around your wonderful website for a bit before finding your blog.

I adopted 2 beautiful creatures from you 2.5 yrs. ago. At that time, I was only looking to adopt one cat. You did me a favor because I just wasn't "thinking outside the box" because I'd always only adopted one at a time in the past.

These 2 are just the best, & I cannot imagine only having one of them. They still play as hard as they did when they were kittens & are best friends for life. Thank you very much for these 2 precious babies. Sending my best wishes to everyone at PPCR.
